Small Business Saturday is a national government backed scheme to raise the profile of small businesses across the UK and encourage people to do business with them.

Brand New Forest started the Small Business Saturday celebrations early by officially announcing Hythe & Dibden as Brand New Forest Village for 2017 at their Hythe Mistletoe Fayre in St John’s Street on Saturday 26 November and launched the 2017 Brand New Forest Card.

On Friday 2 December, to enable residents across the whole forest to take advantage of the Buy 1 Get 1 Free offer NFDC Information Offices will be offering Buy 1 Get 1 Free offer on Brand New Forest cards.

On Small Business Saturday to support the campaign New Forest District Council is once again waiving car parking fees in all 51 council run car parks on 3 December to encourage both residents and visitors to shop locally. Signs will be on display in the car parks reminding shoppers that there is no parking charge.

We’ll also be celebrating this important day with a special launch promotion of the 2017 Brand New Forest Card with a ‘buy 1, get 1 free’ deal on all cards sold from our Visitor Information Centre in Lyndhurst and card retailers listed below on Small Business Saturday itself (3rd December):

Gun Blast to Mark 30th Anniversary

Gun Blast to Mark 30th Anniversary
hurst-castle-logo

Hurst Castle will come alive with the sound of gunfire on Saturday 24th September, as it welcomes the Lord Mayor of London’s ceremonial bodyguard, The Company of the Pikemen and Musketeers to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Friends of Hurst Castle.

The Company of the Pikemen and Musketeers will perform a demonstration of 17th century pike and musket drills at 3pm, which will include trooping the colour, repelling a cavalry charge and forming a battelle with the sound of musket fire, all in uniform identical to that worn by the Honourable Artillery Company in the reign of Charles I.

The event will mark the 30th anniversary of Friends of Hurst Castle, a local voluntary group, established in 1986 to support the running of the castle, in co-operation with Milford-on-Sea based company, Hurst Castle Services, who manages the castle on behalf of English Heritage.

Roger Walker, Chairman of the Friends of Hurst Castle said: “For Friends of Hurst Castle it has always been about supporting a local historical site to ensure its future for the next generation to enjoy.

“It’s an absolute honour to have the Company of the Pikemen and Musketeers to mark our 30th anniversary and we hope locals and tourists will join us to support this day and to witness the castle at its very best.”

Jason Crane, owner of Hurst Castle Services, who manages the castle on behalf of English Heritage said: “Without Friends of Hurst Castle’s support over the last 30 years, the castle wouldn’t be what it is today. This occasion is to celebrate the tremendous work they do both financially and physically and should be a great day out for the whole family to enjoy.”

The castle will open at its normal time of 10.30am on Saturday 24th September, with the first ferry leaving Keyhaven at 10am and then every 20 minutes after. Normal admission prices to the castle will apply on the day; £4.80 for an adult, £4.50 for a senior and £3 for a child.  There will be no extra charge for the ceremonial parade by The Company of the Pikemen and Musketeers at 3pm, which will last approximately 30 minutes.

Notes to editors

The Company of the Pikemen and Musketeers are a ceremonial unit for the Honourable Artillery Company and one of only six royally warranted bodies in the UK.

It was first formed in 1925 to take part in the first Royal Tournament at the Royal Agricultural Hall. The first ‘outing’ was deemed to be such a success that the demonstration team was kept together and developed and has been providing colour and pageantry at events ever since.

In 1955 HM The Queen granted the Company a Royal Warrant authorising it to parade and tasked it to provide a ceremonial bodyguard for the Lord Mayor of the City of London.

Only veteran members of the HAC who have proven efficient service in the HAC’s Territorial Army regiment are eligible to join the Company of the Pikemen and Musketeers.

Broadband @ The New Forest Show

As you may have seen, the focus of the New Forest District Council stand at the New Forest Show was ‘Helping Local Business Grow’. One of a number of attractions and exhibits was a large map of the New Forest showing planned and installed broadband improvements up to and including 2018.

Better Broadband is clearly an important element to doing better business in the district. Not just for web developers and people wishing to access Skype etc. (although this is of course important) but also from the increasing number of people that wish to remove the daily commute and work from or at home.

Recognising and understanding this we asked visitors to the NFDC marquee to place a dot on the map to show whether their perceived broadband was good (green), adequate (amber) or poor (red). The dots placed show that there’s still work to be done before many people feel they have the broadband speeds and quality of service they require.

Of the dots placed on the map, just over half (53%) stated that their perceived broadband speed was poor with a further 25% rating is as adequate. Whist it is acknowledged that this map may be a little self selecting in terms of those who are motivated to contribute towards it, it does all the same highlight the areas where pockets of poor broadband exist.

Broadband Show Map

During the Show members of the Broadband Development Group (including Hyde Community Projects) spoke to a number of local residents and businesses. One of the issues raised was also the poor mobile phone coverage in the New Forest, particular 3 and 4G for use of data. For those who see this as a potential solution to fixed line broadband, this also raises issues.

The Hyde Community Projects Team were there to launch the first version of the Brand New Forest Community Broadband Toolkit; a self help and simple guide aimed at any community wishing to following the footsteps of Hyde and Ellingham Parishes to create their own broadband solution. This guide is very much a first version and will evolve in the weeks and months ahead, not least of all as the Hyde project itself develops. If you’re interested in considering this route you can download a copy of the guide for free via the link below. Further updates as the Toolkit develops will be posted here on the news section of the Brand New Forest website.

Our thanks to Hyde Community Projects for their contribution towards both the Broadband Toolkit and the New Forest Show exhibit.

Do you bite your nails? Well, it’s time to stop!

Creatif-Perfection – 10% off Mavala Nail Biting Kit

Do you bite your nails? Have you given up trying to grow them?

After 40 years of nail biting, I have successfully grown my nails using this nail biting kit. It has worked for me and I have recorded my journey on how I achieved this, with photographic evidence along the way!

12 March – 11 June

We all have habits we want to break – my worst, nail biting, has been with me since a child (over 40 years sounds much better than over 50 years!) ,,,, but I have finally managed to succeed in growing them and it feels great (I know to most people it is normal to have nails, so what’s the deal, but believe me to someone who has always had such cruddy fingers it really is very liberating).

So what made it work?

Firstly, I committed to facing the habit and breaking it. How many times have I said to myself “I want to stop biting my nails”, but expecting it to miraculously happen overnight … a habit is a habit and needs a little bit of help to break particularly when it has been fed for many years.

To be honest, I was getting pretty fed up with sticking on false nails (cost, time and a few embarrassing incidents!), and also it was costly to have the acrylic nails applied every few weeks let alone fitting it in amongst a busy schedule.

So I took the time to really stop and think about how I could break this habit.   The facts were very clear.  Did I really, really want to grow them?  YES, I visualised having lovely long nails to pamper, care for and be proud of and was embarrassed at the daily situations when I knew they were on show.   Secondly, was it something I wanted but couldn’t have – NO, I knew my nails, bless them, would grow pretty quickly if they were allowed to and would grow into a nice shape, and would be strong, despite being attacked for so many years. Thirdly, so what was stopping me – the answer was simple – ME!

So, having this conversation with myself was actually quite empowering in itself as I had given it some serious attention. It all seemed pretty simple really, to break this habit, but of course it isn’t, as anyone with a habit will know.   I think I also thought and accepted that I was “just a nail-biter, born and bred”.  No-one is born with a habit, they develop it of course.

I googled a few tips, to see if there was any help out there as I was sure this was pretty common (maybe not with adults!) – one tip was to practice “mindfulness” – to practice being in the moment and have an awareness of what you are doing. As with most habits, nail biting occurs subconsciously whilst you are thinking of something else!

I then happened to go into Creatif-Perfection, to take them some Brand New Forest Cards and commented that I would love to be able to have manicures. At that point Joy asked me if I had tried the Mavala nail-biting kit.  I was slightly dismissive – I had tried the brush-on nail-biting lotions without success years ago so how could this be any different.

Anyway, having coincidentally been on a mission to tackle and solve my habit, I read the pack and decided to give it ago – after all, at the end of the course (33 days) it says I will have long nails to be proud of!

The pack contains a variety of products to apply to your nails but, most importantly, a day by day guide of what to do! This really helped and each day I vigilantly read the instructions and kept to the course.

The first couple of days I absent mindedly bit my nails and was sharply reminded by the absolutely foul tasting liquid I had applied. It really is nasty and there is no way you can get used to the taste.  It stays on even after washing your hands so there is a constant reminder.

I would say that after two weeks I actually started to lose the “urge” to bite, and I could not believe how soon the habit was no longer a dominating feature of my daily life.

It also amazed me how quickly my nails could recover once left alone, and this inspired me to continue with the course. The instructions said to leave one little pinky free to bite but I decided they would all have the treatment – after all I didn’t want to see a painted set of nails minus one!

At Day 33 my nails were no-where near as long as I would like, but much better nonetheless as you can see. I continued and, after 60 days, my nails looked amazing and I was really proud of my achievement.  I probably overdo the pampering a bit, I carry around the little plastic case with me everywhere, but having not had nails for so long I am making the most of it!

I went to see Joy at Creatif Perfection on 11 June to show off my achievement and had a manicure, with a promise to do a blog. Joy also said she would give 10% off to anyone who would like to buy a Mavala Nailbiting Kit from her.

Not long after seeing Joy, I broke a couple of nails (I let them grow too long!) and this was a real test for me. I was so tempted to bite them right down but I knew that if I did, down would go all of the others and what an absolute waste that would be.

I had a serious talk with myself as to how I would feel if I was back to square one, and the time and effort I had put in to grow them, and thankfully I managed to recover them and they have grown back up – I think I had become too complacent and had not prepared myself for any setbacks, but happily I still have nails that I never, ever thought I would be able to achieve.

So if you are reading this and bite your nails I would strongly recommend that you try this kit as I really didn’t think I would ever be the owner of lovely long nails which I no longer need to hide. Good luck!
